In 1967, a group led by Paul Brown, was granted a franchise in the American Football League (AFL). Brown named the team as the Bengals, in honor of the city's old team.3 At that time, the city also owned a white Bengal tiger at the Cincinnati Zoo.

With the AFL merger with the National Football League (NFL) in 1966, the AFL was allowed to add a new franchise because both sides wanted an even number of teams between the two leagues, reaching this figure to 26. The NFL Agreed that the new franchise should be part of the AFL, so that the nine existing equipment could provide the new franchise.

The 80's

In the 60's and 70's, the Bengals did not get a good season. They obtained two division titles in 1970 and 1973, and also they were classified to Playoffs in 1975, soon to lose in the respective parties.

During the 1980s, the team had its best results in the history of the franchise. With Forrest Gregg, who was a three-time Super Bowl champion and won five NFL titles, the Bengals qualified for the Playoffs twice; 1981 and 1982. In 1981, the team managed a 12-4 and reached the Super Bowl XVI where it fell against the 49ers of Joe Montana, 26-21.4

With Gregg's resignation in the 1983 season, the Bengals hired Sam Wyche - the team's quarterback from 1968 to 1970 - for the 1984 season. In their first four seasons the Bengals failed to qualify for Playoffs but in the season Following (1988), the team matched the franchise's best record (12-4) and went up to the Super Bowl XXIII again against the Montana Niners, again losing by 20-16
